The economic situation in Spain will allow the country to withstand the consequences of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, acting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Friday.

MADRID (Sputnik) – On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

"The current situation of economic growth and creation of working places, the balance of external accounts and the fact that Spain has a healthy financial system will allow us to hold out," Rajoy said in a televised address broadcast on the 24 Horas channel.

He called on the Spanish nationals to remain calm. All agreements between the European Union and the United Kingdom remain in place until the official process of its withdrawals is complete, he reminded.

"The process could take two years," the acting minister said.
