German business in Russia is critical of the decision to extend anti-Russia sanctions by six months, President of the German-Russian Foreign Trade Chamber Rainer Seele said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a source in the European Union Council told Sputnik that the European Union had agreed to extend economic sanctions against Russia until late January 2017, adding that the Council still had to make a formal decision on the matter.

"Further continuation of the bilateral restrictions complicate the resumption of cooperation between Russia and Europe. Sanctions is a political dead end. We want dialogue and we need it. It is in the interest of Germany and the whole European Union. And, of course, in the interests of the Russian economy," Seele was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Chamber.

Since 2014, the European Union has introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions, accusing Moscow of interfering in the Ukrainian crisis — a claim Moscow has repeatedly denied.
