Air France, Lufthansa and British Airways have been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for failed responses to disabled passengers who file written complaints, the US Department of Transportation said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) prohibits airlines from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The law requires airlines to respond, within 30 days in writing, to a written complaint claiming the ACAA has been violated. Moreover, the response must indicate that the complaint has been addressed.

"When air travelers file complaints with airlines, they deserve prompt and complete responses that appropriately answer their specific concerns," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in the release on Thursday. "We will continue to take enforcement action when airlines violate our rules protecting the rights of passengers."

Air France and Lufthansa were each fined $200,000 and British Airways was fined $150,000. All three airlines were also ordered to "cease and desist" from future similar violations.
