President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has been invited to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) later this year and is currently considering his response, the EU ambassador to Russia said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier this month, media reports emerged about the possibility of Juncker visiting Russia's economic forum.

"Juncker has been invited to SPIEF, he is thinking it over," Vygaudas Usackas told reporters.

The 2016 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which is being held under the auspices of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is due to take place on June 16-18. The forum is attended annually by business representatives and officials from dozens of countries.

Last year's edition of SPIEF was ignored by a number of EU senior officials, but attended by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as the heads of state of Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Iraq. In late February 2016, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi accepted Putin's invitation to visit the event this year.
