MOSCOW (Sputnik) Iran wishes to acquire new Russian weapons, and the defense cooperation between the two countries is developing, adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ali Akbar Velayati said Thursday.

"As far as I am aware, the defense cooperation between our countries is developing. Iran wishes to purchase additional volumes [of weapons] from Russia, and the Russian government also has a desire to positively respond to such requests. Considering this, the sides should be able to reach an understanding," Velayati told reporters.

On Monday, Velayati arrived in Russia for a four-day visit to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues with Russian senior officials.

He has met, among other officials, with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, with whom he has also discussed military-technical cooperation between the two countries, particularly with an aim to ensure regional and international security.

Last month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Dehghan, signed an intergovernmental agreement on long-term military cooperation in Tehran.
