Gulf Air, Bahrain’s flag carrier, will purchase 16 new Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 aircraft, costing $4.2 billion, the airline’s acting CEO said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Founded in 1950, Gulf Air is the oldest airline in the Persian Gulf region.

"The airline will receive [the] new planes in the second quarter of 2018, this would enable it to increase the number of destinations where its planes fly," Maher Salman Jabor Al Musallam said in a press conference on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS-2016).

The company has also signed a contract with Airbus for the purchase of 29 new Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 aircraft for $3.4 billion. The planes are expected delivered in June 2018.

The BIAS-2016 event is taking place in Bahrain on January 21-23. Pilots from Russia, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and India are taking part in the show.
