The Russian government plans to nominate Minister of Economic Development Alexei Ulyukyaev into the board of directors of the natural gas giant Gazprom, a government source said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Voting for the company’s board traditionally takes place on the last Friday of June, and a list of candidates is published in February. One of Gazprom’s 11 board members, senior legal academic Valery Musin, has passed away last month.

Ulyukaev is listed among possible candidates the ministry has offered to the government, the source told RIA Novosti. If elected, he would join Energy Minister Alexander Novak as the second sitting cabinet member in the state company’s board of directors.

Neither Gazprom nor the Economic Development Ministry have commented on Ulyukyaev’s candidacy.

First deputy prime minister and special presidential representative for cooperation with the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Viktor Zubkov, chairs the Gazprom board.
