MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The bulk of the redundancies are expected to be made in 2016, the businessman added.
"In toughening market conditions and given the well-documented challenges of operating in this maturing region, we need to take specific steps to ensure our business remains competitive and robust… We expect a reduction of around 600 staff and agency contractor roles by the end of 2017," Mark Thomas, regional president for BP North Sea, said as quoted by the BBC broadcaster.
In total, BP plans to shed around 4,000 jobs from its operations worldwide, the media outlet added.
Over 65,000 people have lost their jobs in the energy sector in the United Kingdom since 2014, when the price of oil halved, dropping from $110 per barrel, according to trade body Oil and Gas UK.
On Monday, Brent crude prices fell to $31.41, the lowest level in 12 years.
