Kosovo, EU Sign Association Agreement

The European Union on Tuesday signed the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Kosovo, EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini said Tuesday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The deal, the signing of which opens the way for Kosovo to start negotiations on the EU membership, was initialed by the parties in 2014.

"Signing Stabilisation and Association Agreement with #Kosovo. Important day for our relations," Mogherini said on Twitter.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February 2008, and has since been recognized by 108 UN member states, while Belgrade considers Kosovo to be part of Serbia. Dozens more countries, five EU member states among them, as well as Russia, do not recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
