MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A number of high-ranking officials of the German concern resigned or were suspended after the US Environmental Protection Agency accused Volkswagen of knowingly installing defective software in cars with diesel engines to mask emission results tests.

An internal investigation suggested that in 2007 Jelden contributed to the alteration of the software to cheat on emission tests, German Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported Saturday.
According to the newspaper, the state prosecutor's office in the German city of Braunschweig investigates into the case of Jelden.
Jelden refused to give comments to the newspaper.
Soon after the cheating was disclosed, the automaker clarified that an estimated 11 million of their diesel engine cars worldwide had been engineered to downplay their emission discharges, emitting up to 20 times more greenhouse gas than detected in official tests.
