New Greek Government Endorses Turkish Stream Pipeline
ISTANBUL (Sputnik) – A Russian delegation will soon arrive in Turkey to discuss the technical aspects to an intergovernmental agreement on the Turkish Stream gas pipeline project, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Friday.

“We agreed that the Turkish Stream pipeline is needed and mutually interesting. But since we’re waiting for [Turkish] parliamentary elections and the forming of the new government, the final agreement on the [intergovernmental document] will be developed with the new government,” Novak said after a meeting with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Ali Riza Alaboyun in Istanbul.

Novak said that specialists continue to work on the project and that they “would soon arrive to discuss the technical aspects for preparing the text,” which will be reviewed by the new Turkish government.

The Turkish Stream is a proposed gas pipeline with an annual capacity of 63 billion cubic meters, running from Russia to Turkey beneath the Black Sea.

The pipeline is expected to continue to a hub on the Turkish-Greek border, from where it could be extended to southern Europe.

Work on the pipeline was scheduled to begin in June, with a launch set for December 2016. Russian and Turkish governments are yet to sign a formal agreement.
