MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The United States and some European Union enterprises seek to conclude the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal not to trade more freely, but to lower consumer protection, environmental and social standards, a member of the National Committee of Germany's Left party told SNA radio on Thursday.

"For the US government, it will be profitable to sign the TTIP agreement in any case. US corporations and a significant number of European corporations are also interested in the implementation of the deal. At the same time it is not about free trade, but about lowering the standards of consumer protection, environmental protection and social standards on both sides of the Atlantic," Sahra Wagenknecht said.

According to the politician, there is a large rally against the deal planned to be held in Berlin. However, the German government is supporting the deal so pressure is necessary, Wagenknecht said.

"I think there has been no progress in the TTIP talks, and so they can be halted and TTIP could be buried," she said.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the United States is aimed at creating the world's largest free trade zone that would account for 60 percent of global production.

The deal has drawn criticism from the public for the lack of transparency in its negotiations and the power it would give to international corporations.
