"We agreed that enhancing bilateral collaboration in the energy sector was one of the major areas of mutually beneficial cooperation," Adviser to Pakistan's Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was quoted as saying by the Dawn newspaper.
According to Aziz, progress on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project was a key issue on the agenda of the talks.
Iran and Pakistan signed a preliminary agreement on constructing a gas pipeline in 1995. After a long delay in constructing Pakistan's section of the pipeline, Islamabad officially suspended the project in 2014 amid the international sanctions against Iran.
In July, the UN Security Council approved a resolution to lift the sanctions imposed on Iran in exchange for guarantees of the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear program. Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Amir Hossein Zamaninia said the sanctions against Iran's energy sector were likely to be lifted in October or November.
Iran is estimated to have 18.2 percent of the world's global natural gas reserves, according to a 2015 British Petroleum report.
