The Russian government has approved a preliminary agreement between Russia and Pakistan to cooperate on a gas pipeline project: “North – South”; the new pipeline will run between Karachi and Lahore, reports the press service of the Russian Cabinet.

The realization of the project will require the maximum use of technology, materials, equipment and products produced in Russia. It would also involve Russian research, design and construction organizations.

The Pakistani side, as stated in the document, will provide rights for using the land required for the project as well as a permit for conducting research work related to the construction of the gas pipeline.

The agreement is valid for 25 years and provides for the possibility of automatic renewals for five-year periods.

The Russian Energy Ministry, together with the Foreign Ministry, is due to hold talks with the Pakistani side and after an agreement is reached it is to sign a document on behalf of the Russian government.
