Barclay's is launching its new Twitter payment service on Tuesday, becoming the first British bank to allow people to transfer money to each other and small businesses using the social network.

LONDON (Sputnik) – The new service is powered by the Barclay's Pingit mobile phone application, which will enable its users to make secure payments through Twitter without providing bank details.

"It doesn't matter if you don't bank with us. All you need are your bank or building society account details and a smartphone with a UK-registered number," the Barclays website says, explaining the procedures for Pingit registration.

The Pingit Twitter payment service will be available to all Android phone and iOS device users starting from March 10, regardless of whether they are Barclays clients.

Pingit itself was first launched in 2012. The number of its users is estimated to stand at 13.5 million people.
