US Department of Transportation reported that Honda auto-maker has been fined a record $70 million for failing to report over 1,700 fatalities and injuries to the government.

WASHINGTON, January 9 (Sputnik) – Honda auto-maker has been fined a record $70 million for failing to report over 1,700 fatalities and injuries to the US government, the Department of Transportation has announced.

"Honda will pay two $35 million civil penalties, for a total of $70 million, for failing to report deaths, injuries, and certain warranty claims to the federal government," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated in a press release Thursday, citing "Honda's failure to report 1,729 death and injury claims to NHTSA between 2003 and 2014".

NHTSA's investigation also discovered that Honda had failed to submit early warning reports identifying potential or actual safety issues, which violates federal reporting requirements.

According to its statement, the NHTSA issued $126 million in civil penalties in 2014, which exceeds the total amount of fines issued by the agency in its 43-year history. Honda's $70 million fine is NHTSA's single largest.

Some of NHTSA's notable fines in 2014 include a $35 million penalty against General Motors and a $17 million fine against Hyundai, both of which were put forward for the companies" failure to issue recalls in a timely manner.
