KIEV, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) may finance Ukraine’s gas purchases, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday.
“I would like to note the recent EBRD decision, an unprecedented decision under which projects for Ukraine and decisions on financing projects in Ukraine will be considered in a most simple procedure possible, including the possibility of financing purchases of natural gas,” he said.
Earlier in October, EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti said, addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, that the EBRD's investment in Ukraine will reach 1 billion euro ($1.3 billion) by the end of 2014. The bank also pledged to continue supporting Ukraine in several sectors, including energy.
As a result of the ongoing political crisis in the country, Ukraine is currently on the verge of a default. Kiev authorities are trying to rescue the country's economy with international loans.
