CABINET SETS UP COMMISSION TO MAKE RUSSIA MORE COMPETITIVE. FRADKOV TO LEAD

MOSCOW, APRIL 2, RIA NOVOSTI - Russia is establishing a government commission to make the country more competitive. Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov will lead the new body, he announced to newsmen.

The commission will work out competition criteria, and determine the best ways to hit related targets. Meanwhile, the government has not yet come to an accord on the matter, and debates are in full swing, said the federal Premier.

Attached to the commission will be an informal expert council to take stock of information about developments in Russia's various parts for trouble-shooting, if it becomes necessary. If the competitiveness commission proves efficient, the government will no longer need its Entrepreneurial Council, added Mr. Fradkov.

A technological breakthrough is present-day Russia's primary need. The task demands smooth organisation. Business circles must necessarily join the efforts. "This is our chance. If we miss it, we shall lose everything," he emphasised.
