MOSCOW, MARCH 12, (RIA NOVOSTI) - The new federal Cabinet must resolutely promote Russian research and technologies, holds Mayor Yuri Luzhkov of Moscow.

"I want the new government to pose a consolidated objective, which will allow our science and technology to make rapid progress for the entire human race to benefit," he said in an opening address to a gala evening on the 70th birth anniversary of Yuri Gagarin, the world's first space pilot.

Willpower, vast resources and noble goals merged together to ensure spectacular achievements of the Russian space efforts. Even when the posed goals appear unattainable, leaders and researchers always come up who are able to attain them sooner and more efficiently than others, said the Mayor.

"Our space flights are success as before, and a Russian is now on the International Space Station crew. We take pride in all that," joined in Yuri Koptev, Director General of the Rosaviacosmos, or Russian Aerospace Agency.

"Our nation owes its achievements to you," he said to the gala audience of active and retired space pilots and researchers.

"We shall never forget the behest of chief spacecraft designers, and we shall carry on their cause at whatever cost," added Mr. Koptev.

He read to the gathering a greeting message in which Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov says, in particular, that present-day Russia has every opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Sergei Korolev, pioneer spacecraft designer, and Yuri Gagarin, trailblazing space pilot.
