ALMA-ATA, February 27 (RIA Novosti) - Industrial output in Russia grew by 7% last year, said Viktor Khristenko, Russia's acting prime minister, at a session of the EURASEC interstate council in Alma-Ata Friday.

As Khristenko said, "output in some sectors grew faster than in others: in engineering and metalworking - by 9.4%, in the fuel industry - by 9.3%, and in ferrous metallurgy - by 8.9%." At the same time, he said, the determining factor of output growth in the engineering sector was the activation of domestic aggregate demand for products of railway transport engineering and instrument-making, as well as household equipment, rather than orders from the main export sectors.

"As a result of operation of the competition mechanism, segments of successfully operating enterprises have appeared in the majority of sectors, and their products do not only compete successfully with imported commodities, but are actively promoted onto the foreign markets," Khristenko stressed.
