MOSCOW, January 13 (RIA Novosti) - Aleksei Gordeyev, Vice Premier and Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, called on departments and offices to draw up measures against illegal sugar supplies from Kazakhstan and Belarus to Russia. He made the statement during Tuesday's session of the governmental consumer market commission.

According to the official, it is Belarus and Kazakhstan that account for the largest share in white sugar smuggling. At the same time, the volumes of their supplies are far higher than the volume of sugar these countries produce.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Customs Committee Alexander Zherekhov suggested that quotas on sugar imports should be introduced. However, this proposal was not backed up by Gordeyev, who called on offices and departments to work out proposals on measures against sugar smuggling.
