ASTANA, January 10th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - Governors of Russian regions bordering on Kazakhstan are coming out for further co-operation between the two countries.

The governors are escorting Russian President Vladimir Putin, now on a two-day visit to Kazakhstan.

"The two presidents outlined milestones of integration processes," said Omsk governor Leonid Polezhayev. He emphasised that Russian regional leaders were facing the task of developing integration processes.

Kazakhstan shares 60% of the trade turnover of the Omsk region. We are not only trade partners, we have strong energy links, said the governor.

Alexei Chernyshov, governor of another border area - the Orenburg region, said that Russia-Kazakhstan co-operation was chiefly improving due to regional co-operation of the two countries.

The Orenburg region has the longest border with Kazakhstan - 850 km and borders on three regions of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan shares 20% of the Orenburg region's turnover.

Saratov governor Dmitry Ayatskov has stated that a single checkpoint on the eastern border with Kazakhstan will be opened in his region in spring. He emphasised that the border should be open for investment and closed for drugs.
