The island is relatively frequently hit by earthquakes, as Taiwan is located near the Ring of Fire - a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean with extremely high seismic activity.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Taiwan at 22:14 local time, just minutes after a 5.8 shock, the Central Weather Bureau announced on Sunday. The epicentre of the first seismic event was registered 19 km southwest of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 15 km. The second quake was located 20 km southwest of the same location at a shallower 13.9 km depth.

No reports of any damage or casualties caused by the double quake have been reported.

In January, a 5.7-magnitude quake hit the island. Taiwan is located close to the junction of two tectonic plates in the South China Sea and is frequently shaken by quakes.
