The tremor occurred the day after a powerful 7.1-magnitude quake hit the country's north, with significant aftershocks from the strike reaching the capital. According to the government, no nuclear facilities were affected by the disaster.

A new quake hit near Fukushima Prefecture at around 7:30 a.m. GMT on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at a depth of 50 kilometres.

There have been no reports of any casualties or damage caused by the new earthquake so far.

The island nation frequently suffers from seismic activity, especially the Fukushima Prefecture that was infamously hit by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake in 2011. The subsequent tsunami resulted in a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, forcing some 160,000 people to evacuate from the area.
