According to the USGS, the epicentre of the trenbles lies some 218 kilometres soutrh of the city of Sofifi located on the country's largest island.

A 5.9 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's  Halmahera Island on Saturday, US Geological Survey reports. The epicentre of the quake was at the depth of 10 kilometres.

There are no information about damages or casualties, as well as no tsunami warning has been issued.

​Indonesia is part of a zone known as the Ring of Fire which is prone to suffer from powerful earthquakes.

Known for its high levels of volcanic and seismic activity, the Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and tectonic faults in the Pacific basin.

One of the most recent earthquakes in the region occurred on 20 August, when a powerful 6.3-magnitude tremor hit the Solomon Islands.
