MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A total of nine foreign nationals are among those who were injured in the car ramming incident in Australia’s Melbourne, the police of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria said in a Friday statement.

On Thursday, a car drove into a crowd of pedestrians in Melbourne. The driver and another person have been detained, the latter of whom was questioned and later released.

"Nine of the victims are overseas nationals including South Korea, China, Italy, India, Venezuela, Ireland and New Zealand," the statement said.

According to the police, a total of 20 people were sent to hospitals, 14 of whom are still in the medical facilities.

The statement added that local law enforcement agencies believed that the incident was not part of a coordinated attack.

In connection with the incident, a 32-year-old Australian of Afghan origin, who was driving the car was detained. According to the authorities, he underwent treatment for a mental disorder.
