Two Heads, One Torso: Unusual Conjoined Twins Born in India [GRAPHIC VIDEO]

The birth of rare babies with common body and limbs in the Maharashtra state has left local doctors shocked – this serious and extremely rare phenomenon, known as dicephalic parapagus, happens only once in a million births.

Extraordinary Siamese twins were born to a tribal couple at Swami Ramanand Teerth Government Hospital in the Indian city of Ambajogai on Sunday. Baby boys weighing 3.7 kilograms shared a torso and vital body parts such as the heart, liver and lungs, but had two heads side by side. The birth of these children took doctors by surprise as such twins, called dicephalic parapagus, are often stillborn.

"The possibility of the birth of conjoined twins exists once in one lakh [100,000] deliveries and the chances of dicephalic parapagus twins are around 10% of such births," Dr. Sanjay Bansode, who heads the gynecology and obstetrics department at the hospital, told local news outlet. Sixty percent of such babies die after birth, doctors said.

Nineteen hours after birth, the twins suffered breathing problems and were put on a life support system. According to doctors, deviations in development were found only on the eighth month of pregnancy after a sonography test; the mother of the babies hadn't undergone diagnostics before. The family, who has already four children, was warned that it is almost impossible to separate dicephalic parapagus twins and that they may not survive after birth. The babies died one day after birth.
