A street dog fell into one of the open wells filled with water that are common in rural areas in India and struggled to stay afloat for hours before rescuers arrived to save her.

Villagers who noticed the dog fighting for her life in a deep well assume that she had spent hours there trying to keep her head above water, swimming and desperately clinging to the rocks on the sides of the well.

When a team from Animal Aid Unlimited, a leading street animal rescue center in India, arrived at the scene, the dog was rapidly losing strength, her paws bleeding.

"We could see that she was minutes away from giving in to her exhaustion," the organization said.

Rescuers managed to place the poor frightened animal into a net and pull her all the way up to safety.

The dog was then taken to a veterinarian and had her bloody paws patched up. She has recovered and now appears to be happy and healthy.
