MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Indian media reported earlier in the day that heavily armed attackers stormed in a police post in Pulwama, opening gunfire and throwing hand grenades at security officers. According to previous reports, three officers were killed.
According to ANI news outlet, Indian army and police have launched a joint operation to evacuate those remaining at the scene and eliminate the terrorists. So far, two attackers have been killed, with three others barricading themselves in one of the building's blocks.
The operation is still underway, the news outlet added.
The Jammu and Kashmir region has been disputed by India and Pakistan since the end of British rule in 1947. Following several armed conflicts, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire in 2003. Since then, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce. The unstable situation in the region led to the emergence of extremist groups.
