South Korea will support Sierra Leone with humanitarian assistance worth $300,000 to help the African nation deal with the deadly mudslide, local media reported Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On August 14, the African country was hit by a mudslide and floods that resulted in hundreds of deaths. According to recent media reports, the death toll had almost reached 500.

Seoul's assistance should facilitate recovery from the disaster and stabilize the lives of local residents, the Yonhap news agency reported citing the South Korean Foreign Ministry.

According to the media outlet, support of the countries hit by natural disasters is part of South Korea's humanitarian diplomacy.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a press release on Tuesday that an estimated 3,000 or more people were believed to have lost their homes and were in immediate need of emergency assistance and shelter.

International charity Save the Children expressed concerns in a statement on Friday over the potential spread of cholera and contamination of water in Sierra Leone.
