Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during their meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum in Manila that the escalation of tensions resulting from the US military buildup in the Korean Peninsula is unacceptable.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the bilateral meeting in the Philippines, Lavrov and Tillerson discussed the situation around North Korea, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov "noted the unacceptability of the escalation of tensions resulting from the US military buildup in the area of the Korean Peninsula," the statement added.

Lavrov reminded of common Russian-Chinese initiative for the Korean settlement, saying that it contains support for the Russian proposal to develop a roadmap of gradual restoration of trust and building conditions to resume the six-party talks.

"We agreed to promote the concept in practice, including in the United Nations," Lavrov said.

In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow and Beijing would promote their common initiative regarding settlement of North Korean situation, which is based on the Russian step-by-step plan of the settlement and China’s proposal of "double freeze," which implies end of North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests, as well as of joint military drills of South Korea and the United States.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution 2371, tightening the sanctions imposed on North Korea. The document bans imports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead and seafood from the Asian nation by the UN member states. After the resolution was adopted, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that potential reckless military activities regarding North Korea carried out by anyone will result in a disaster for both regional and global stability.

Earlier this week, media reports suggested that US aircraft carriers may be headed to Korean waters for forward deployment, however, the Pentagon hasn't confirmed the information yet.
