MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the bilateral meeting in the Philippines, Lavrov and Tillerson discussed the situation around North Korea, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Lavrov "noted the unacceptability of the escalation of tensions resulting from the US military buildup in the area of the Korean Peninsula," the statement added.
"We agreed to promote the concept in practice, including in the United Nations," Lavrov said.
In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow and Beijing would promote their common initiative regarding settlement of North Korean situation, which is based on the Russian step-by-step plan of the settlement and China’s proposal of "double freeze," which implies end of North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests, as well as of joint military drills of South Korea and the United States.
Earlier this week, media reports suggested that US aircraft carriers may be headed to Korean waters for forward deployment, however, the Pentagon hasn't confirmed the information yet.
