TOKYO (Sputnik) – The proposal will now be debated by the party in parliament. If approved, the LDP will make changes to its charter at the party conference next March.
The term of the incumbent prime minister, Shinzo Abe, is due to expire in 2018. He took up the post in 2006 and stepped down in 2007, before reclaiming the job in 2012.
The extension of Abe’s tenure will allow him to go ahead with his policies, including the controversial economic plan, dubbed Abenomics, which secured his second term in office.
The program aims to halt economic stagnation through structural reforms, monetary easing and fiscal stimulus. It was described as a failure by the opposition.
