The Lawin typhoon, also known as Haima, which is approaching the northeastern Philippine regions has intensified into a super typhoon, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA-DOST) said Wednesday.

BALI (Sputnik) — The PAGASA-DOST added that the wind speed at the super typhoon was estimated to be some 140 miles per hour.

According to the agency, at 7 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT) the eye of the typhoon was located at some 110 miles East Northeast from the northern country's province of Aurora.

The Philippines and surrounding regions are hit by dozens of tornadoes and typhoons annually during the monsoon season typically between June and December.
