Rahmatullah Nabil, former head of the National Directorate of Security of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, told Sputnik that in order to defeat terrorism in the country the national unity government needs to support the security forces that constantly clash with "terrorists who hung a chain on their neck, the links of which are the lives of civilians".
"It’s no secret what the problems our country is facing are. The war has been raging for 40 years now. The economic infrastructure is destroyed, many civilians have been killed and discord is being deliberately sown between various clans and tribes. The nation’s hope for peace keeps evaporating day by day," he said.
Nabil added that the Afghan security forces continue to display unwavering loyalty towards the citizens they’re sworn to protect, even despite the fact that the government doesn’t support the special forces members and "doesn’t react to their needs."
"Essentially, the security forces play the role of that column, that force that unites all strata of the Afghan society in the face of a common threat. They fulfil a function that was delegated to them but wasn’t implemented by the government," he explained.
All in all, the only way to bring peace to Afghanistan and to defeat rampant terrorist groups is for the Afghan government to provide whole-hearted support to the security forces, according to Rahmatullah Nabil.
"The security forces require national and international support, the support of the government. This is the only way to, one day, reach peace and stability in Afghanistan – things that Afghan land and Afghan society are deprived of right now," Nabil surmised.
