EU to Pay Refugees in Turkey $33 Monthly as Part of Migrant Deal

Refugees in Turkey will receive 30 euros ($33) on a monthly basis from the European Union as part of the bloc's humanitarian aid program for one million refugees in the country, a EU source told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — According to the source, refugees will be able to pay for clothes, education and accommodation with the help of the cards.

"The card holders will receive 100 Turkish liras on average. Families with schoolchildren will receive more money. The application process for bank cards will start in October," the source said.

On Monday, the European Union launched a 348-million-euro ($390 million) humanitarian aid program, which is part of the EU-Turkey migrant deal.

In mid-March, Brussels and Ankara agreed on a deal under which Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who arrive in the European Union through its territory in exchange for Syrian refugees accommodated in Turkey, on a one-for-one basis. In return, the European Union pledged to provide a total of 3 billion euros to Turkey to help it deal with refugees, with a possible further 3-billion-euro provision in 2018.
