Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia’s Coast, No Tsunami Threat
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The first, 5.9-magnitude, quake hit at 01:20 GMT on Saturday about 48 kilometers (about 30 miles) northwest of Jayapura, the capital of Papua Province. It was followed by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the same area at 02:06 GMT.

At 02:30 GMT on Saturday a 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred about 66 kilometers (41 miles) southwest of Pagaralam, a city in Indonesia’s South Sumatra Province.

A source in the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) told RIA Novosti that there was no risk of a tsunami after the first two earthquakes.

According to BMKG, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake occurred about 79 kilometers (49 miles) northwest of the capital of Indonesia’s Bengkulu Province on Saturday, after the first two quakes.

Indonesia is located in the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
