Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia’s Coast, No Tsunami Threat

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake has occurred off Indonesia’s Seram island, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

BALI (Sputnik) – The quake hit at around 19:45 GMT on Thursday, its epicenter was located about 49 kilometers (about 30 miles) southeast of the smaller Saparua island, which lies south of Seram.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

A source in the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) told RIA Novosti that there is no risk of a tsunami following the quake.

Indonesia is located in the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
