According to the NDTV broadcaster, four people died because of chikungunya in the city, while other mosquito-born diseases such as dengue and malaria claimed lives of at least 10 people.
The broadcaster added that the Indian Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is the ruling party in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, faced severe criticism, because a number of high-ranking officials of the AAP, including the region's Health Minister Satyender Jain and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, were not in the city during the outbreak.
The chikungunya fever is rarely fatal but its symptoms include high fever, joint swelling, pain, nausea, headache, rash and fatigue. The disease, which is typically only found in Africa and Southeast Asia, has a very low mortality rate of about 1 death per 1,000 cases, with those already sick most at risk. The fever has no specific treatment.
