NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The incident occurred in the state's Baramulla district sometime around 21:00 GMT on Tuesday. The attackers ambushed the convoy on the Srinagar-Baramulla motorway, with the ensuing firefight lasting more than 20 minutes and the militants escaping afterward, The Indian Express newspaper reported.
"Two army men and a police constable were killed in the attack, there are some injuries as well," an army spokesman told the newspaper.
The incident comes amid growing anti-Indian protests and escalating violence in the disputed region. On Tuesday, deadly clashes between police and protesters continued, with the death toll rising to 64.
On August 9, three Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers were killed and several injured during an attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
The region of Kashmir has been disputed by India and Pakistan since the dissolution of British India and the establishment of the two states in 1947. Some local residents, especially those residing in the Kashmir Valley, call for greater autonomy or even independence from India.
