Thailand to Use Pokemon Go to Attract Tourists After Blasts in Resorts

Thailand is planning to resort to Pokemon Go in a bid to promote tourism and attract visitors as recent deadly blasts that hit its several resorts have led to a decrease in tourists' activity, Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said on Tuesday.

BANGKOK (Sputnik) — Last week, a series of blasts killed four people and injured dozens, including foreign tourists, on the island of Phuket, in the town of Hua Hin and several other Thai tourist spots.

"The ministry will create an info graphic map and user guide for Pokemon hunters, offering locations, tips, and do's and don'ts for tourists," the minister said as quoted by the Bangkok post.

To hit its target, the ministry will ask mobile operator company True Corporation to add PokeStops and Gyms to different popular and safe tourist spots to attract visitors to catch Pokemon items there, the media outlet added.

However, Thai authorities currently insist on limiting the game on the territory of the country over security concerns. Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is now awaiting an answer to a request to Niantic, the developer of Pokemon Go, sent on August 10, to remove sensitive areas from the mobile game. It threatened to ban the game if the request is not fulfilled.
