Motorcycle ambulances has been a boon for the pregnant women and other sick patients living deep inside the dense Jungles of Chattisgarh where roads are non-existent. The two wheeled ambulance is a new concept in India and has played played a crucial role in saving the lives of pregnant women and other people who are dying, as the terrain keeps many from reaching the hospital safely and in a timely manner.

The idea comes from Africa, where motorbikes have been used for some time as roving ambulances. It has even gained the praise of UNICEF for its part in reducing infant mortality and maternity complications. In addition, more than 300 lives have been saved because of the two wheeled ambulance.
The bikes have a modified four-stroke engine fitted with a side-carriage customized to carry patients. Bike riders are specially trained to drive in rough terrain.
Success of the program has prompted the state government to entrust the National Institute of Technology to improve the designs of these lifesaving machines.
