A Chinese court sentenced on Friday human rights activist Gou Hongguo to three years in jail for subversion, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The activist said he would not appeal against the judgment, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier Chinese media reported that Gou pleaded guilty. He was accused of taking part in anti-Chinese forums abroad and spreading subversive ideas in China after returning.

He is said to have provided money for a number of other activists also being under investigation or already sentenced for subversion.

In July 2015, Chinese authorities launched a massive crackdown on dissent. Around 300 people, mostly rights activists and lawyers, were detained and questioned. Most of them were later released.

On Thursday, a Chinese court sentenced lawyer and human rights activist Zhou Shifeng linked to Gou on charges of attempting to overthrow the government to seven years imprisonment.
