Police are tracking down an armed man who shot a resident of the New Zealand's Christchurch City social housing complex in Hei Hei, the Christchurch Police said in a statement on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the police, an armed man who has left the Hei Hei social complex after shooting a resident is described as Maori or Pacific Islander in his 20s.

"Christchurch Police were called to a Hei Hei address this afternoon following reports a man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. A [armed] man left the address on foot and two nearby schools, St Bernadette’s School and Hornby High School, have been placed into lock down as a precaution," the statement reads.

Police added they believed all parties to the incident were known to each other and deemed it isolated incident, noting that there is no reason for the public to be concerned for their safety.

According to media reports, the injured man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening wound to his upper leg.
