Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh has cancelled his US visit amid deadly clashes in the India-administered Kashmir territory, ministerial sources told Sputnik on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — Around 30 people lost their lives in violence after Indian security forces killed a commander of the region’s largest militant group, Hizbul Mujahideen, last week.

The home minister was scheduled to visit the United States this Sunday for the Indo-US Homeland Security Dialogue in Washington, D.C.

Rajnath Singh attended a high-level meeting on the Kashmir crisis on Tuesday. The emergency talks were chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned from his four-nation Africa tour earlier today.

"Home Minister Rajnath Singh is briefing [Modi] about the latest situation in Kashmir and [the] future course of action," sources said.

The gathering was attended by Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, as well as chiefs of the domestic Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the foreign intelligence agency.

The region of Kashmir has been disputed by India and Pakistan since the dissolution of British India and the establishment of the two countries in 1947. Some local residents, especially those residing in the Kashmir Valley, call for greater autonomy or even independence from India.
