VIENNA (Sputnik) – North Korea’s activities continue to be a matter of concern for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as the country’s authorities have failed to show commitment to fulfilling their obligations under the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions adopted in light of Pyongyang’s illicit nuclear tests, IAEA head said Monday.
"I remain seriously concerned about the nuclear programme of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It is deeply regrettable that the DPRK has shown no indication that it is willing to comply with the Security Council resolution adopted in response to its nuclear test earlier this year," IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said in a statement, as quoted on the agency’s website.
Tensions over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs escalated after Pyongyang said on January 6 that it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test and put a satellite into orbit on February 7, violating UNSC resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community in both cases.
