S Korea Prosecutors Raid Volkswagen Offices Over Emissions Fraud

South Korean prosecutors announced Friday they had raided the offices of German automaker Volkswagen after it did not recall orders on its cars with devices that impaired their emission control systems, local media reported Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the Yonhap news agency, the country’s justice minister ordered the company to recall the affected vehicles and provide data on maintaining fuel efficiency in November. Last month, the ministry brought the case against the head of the company over failing to provide sufficient data.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said Friday it had seized computer hard drives, documents on Volkswagen vehicles' emissions and correspondence with the manufacturer’s headquarters in Germany, according to the media outlet.

The prosecutors said they would summon officials from the company after they analyze the seized materials.

In September, the German automaker admitted that it had installed software in their vehicles to falsify emission tests. The company later clarified that an estimated 11 million diesel-engine cars worldwide were emitting up to 20 times more greenhouse gas than showed in the tests.

Following the emissions scandal going public, Volkswagen announced it would set aside more than $7 billion to mitigate the emissions effects.
