The number of people killed in the earthquake in southern Taiwan reached 116 on Saturday, bringing the search-and-rescue operation to an end, media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck 28 miles southeast of the city of Tainan earlier this month, toppling multiple buildings, including a 17-story residential building.

According to the BBC, the operation ended as the remains of the final person on the missing list were found.

Some 500 people have been reported injured due to the earthquake.

Taiwan lies along the so-called Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes around the Pacific Rim, where about 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur.
