Over 130 People Trapped in Collapsed Building After Taiwan Earthquake

At least 132 people are trapped under the rubble of a residential building after a powerful earthquake in southern Taiwan, media reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck 28 miles southeast of the city of Tainan on Saturday, toppling multiple buildings, including a 17-story residential building.

According to the BBC, rescue teams have been working all night with sniffer dogs and special devices to locate the survivors.

Meanwhile, the death toll of the disaster has grown to 18, according to local media.

Some 500 people were injured.

Taiwan lies along the so-called Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of volcanoes around the Pacific Rim, where about 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur.
