Japanese airlines canceled on Sunday a total of 166 flights in the direction of the cities located in the southwestern part of the country due to heavy snowfall.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — Seven airlines on their official website on Sunday morning reported the cancellation of flights to Kinki, the islands of Shikoku and northern Kyushu regions, among others.

Kyushu — where the snow is rare — was brought to a standstill by three inches, Kagoshima — by almost two inches, while some other locations all across the area — for instance, the Hiroshima and Ishikawa prefectures — had adapted to even greater accumulation.

Early this week, Japan was hit by heavy snow that caused injuries, road closures, delayed trains, and canceled flights. The snow continued later this week and is expected to calm down somehow on Monday, with temperatures in the western and southwestern areas expected to fall below average seasonal marks.
