Eight people have died in northeastern India and one death was reported in nearby Bangladesh after a powerful earthquake struck 20 miles west of the Manipur state capital of Imphal early Monday, the Times of India publication said.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – The 6.7-magnitude quake on the Richter scale struck in the pre-dawn hours at depths of over 30 miles, injuring over 100 as reports of damages continue to file in. Hours later, fresh 3.6-magnitude tremors were reported in the region.

Home Ministry sources told Sputnik earlier that two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) battalions have been deployed in Manipur for relief and rehabilitation work.

In addition to Manipur, the quake was felt in the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar, as well as neighboring Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The single death in Bangladesh was said to be of a heart attack sustained during the earthquake.

Social media users have posted photographs of structural damage to buildings, including entirely flattened structures, and crowds gathering outside.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the deep tremors to have struck Myanmar at a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he spoke with Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the phone, asking him to oversee the situation.

He later spoke with chief ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur, the part of the country hardest hit by the earthquake.
